W00tstock 5.0 - George RR Martin vs. Paul and Storm

Most gamers seem to be a fan of George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series--also known now as HBO's Game of Thrones series. The books are outstanding. However, a lot of fans get filled with angst because release dates between books of the author is notoriously and severely long. There are now concerns that the HBO series will out pace the books. During the latest Comic-Con in San Diego, a comic duo called Paul and Storm had it out with the author (all in good fun):

There is a RPG published by Green-Ronin based on the world but I have not played it. Have any of you?

  1. At this point, I don't really care if he ever does finish them. Book 4 and book 5 both needed a good editor that wasn't a HUGE fan and at this point I've somewhat lost interest in the books. The series started out very strong but at this point I don't think he really likes writing them. The skit was very funny though and I did get a genuine laugh. I also think it was cool that Neil Gaiman was in on this. If you have not read any of Neil Gaiman's books, I highly recommend it. American Gods is a great place start.

This article gives a great ammount of insight into why these books are not being properly pared down to size the editor. http://sf-fantasy.suvudu.com/2011/07/dance-interview-with-george-r-r-martin-editor-anne-groell.html . It seems like hardly anything gets cut out in favor or shifting it to the next book. There was PLENTY in both book 4 and 5 that could have hit the cutting floor. That last question summs it up.

  2. The TV show has been great so far. As far as the books go, I have had Feast for Crows sitting on my night stand for years. I start it, suffer about one third of the way through and then put it down. I have done this three times now. I have had Dance with Dragons since its release date and have only touched it to loan it to other people and put it back on the bookshelf because I can't get through Feast. So I agree with you.

  3. I think the show is great and probably will continue to be because they will cut out anything that doesnt move the story along. I had to listen to feast on audio to make it through.
